Cylindrical-shaped squash with a bulbous end containing all its seeds. The skin is cream-tan and the cooked dark orange meat is dense, smooth and succulent with a fruity-sweet, nutty flavor. Butternut is the easiest to peel and is considered the workhorse of all hard-shelled squashes. Its also excellent for roasting and pureeing in soups and often used as filling for stuffed pastas.
